Debconf 2002 Canada in trouble...

Joe Drew has written to
the Debian-devel mailing list about the organisation for the July 2002
gathering of international Debian developers currently being in a dire
situation. The conference is facing two problems:

The current venue, Toronto will be hosting World Youth Day,
millions of tourists and the Pope and subsequently, accommodation
arrangements will be limited.
Most venues are quoting corporate rates despite Debian's
non-profit nature and Internet connectivity is still only a
possibility.

Drew warns that "It's become slowly apparent that Debconf 2002
won't be able to be held in Toronto, unless someone with connections
rapidly comes up with something which is more reasonable.". He
also suggests that the whole conference may moved to Waterloo, Ontario
or even postponed.

So if you happen to know someone in the Canadian LUG,
universities or convention/conference scene who can help out in whatever way possible; now would be a good time
to step up and offer your assistance to the Debian community.

I sent an e-mail out to debian-devel last week about this.
For the record, the York University Computer Club is working towards having Debconf at York University, which is in Toronto.
Our goals are:

Free conference rooms/classrooms for the conference.

Cheap lodging for delegates (i.e. utilizing residences).

Plenty of internet access, boxes for coding/XTerminals, etc...

Access to any other needed resources that we may have availible.

I've spoken with Joe and a bunch of people at the university and thus far things are looking good. We should know for certain within a week or two if it's feasible. From my converstaion with Joe, it is my understanding that the major problem is that Debian was being treated as a company instead of the volunteer organization it is. On the other hand, while I'm not a Debian user myself (Redhat and OpenBSD mostly), I and the other execs of YUCC appreciate the contribution it makes to the Linux community. We'd love to help out in any way possible.

DebConf has been in Europe (Bordeaux in France) for the last two years, so it's probably a good idea to have it somewhere else for a change. It can always come back to Europe in the future.

Hate to sound biased, but, well, yeah, I am. :) Living in Waterloo, I must say that I would be very interested in having it come here! I would even be willing to volunteer to help out.

I don't know what a good venue would be for the event -- I don't know how big it is, but I know that there are definitely folks at the University of Waterloo who are into Linux and Debian.

Waterloo is perfect. There are lots of tech companies, accomodations would be reasonable, it is only an hour from either Hamilton (West Jet) or Toronto (all other airlines) and there is a strong Linux presence. Best of all, it likely wouldn't be hosting any other conferences.

In addition, Kitchener, Cambridge and Guelph (each about 10 mins. away) could all be used for accomodations if Waterloo is full up, giving many more hotels to choose from. All the cities have some sort of accomodations for larger conferences and ready internet access should be easy to obtain.

Besides, my ex-wife lives there and I could combine a trip to the conference with a visit with my son ;)

What about western Canada? Ever think about Edmonton, Calgary or Vancouver? All of those major Canadian cities have actually had economic growth this year!!

Well, I don't know the Vancouver area at all. But I do know that the University of Alberta (in Edmonton) uses OpenBSD along with some form of Linux for their network. They teach a lot of Linux in their classes and have several LUG's and UNIX User Groups.

They're also many Linux orientated companies around Edmonton as well. They range from using Linux in embeded industrial control's to Linux consulting services.

I live in Vancouver, I don't know how many people we are talking about attending but UBC (Univeristy of British Columbia) would be an option and possibly SFU (Simon Fraser Univeristy also in Vancouver). I go to UBC so I know that that in the summer you can house people for events like this.

There is a vancouver Linux group at www.vanlug.bc.ca that would be worth contacting if people wanted it in Vancouver.

You might want to contact Libranet too since they are a Debian based distro that is based in Vancouver. (Stormix, another Debian-based Linux distribution was also in Vancouver BC while it was alive).
